Minor-league basketball players will make a major impression when the American Basketball Association season tips off here in November.

The Western Oklahoma Bulls, one of the ABA’s newest teams, will play home games at Elk City’s Arrowhead Center.

The Bulls are coached by El Reno native Jonathan Reed. A member of the Cedar Valley Junior College national championship basketball team, Reed played in the NBA Summer League, then the Ireland Professional League where he was named Player of the Year. He also coached at Enid High School.

The team’s home opener is November 4 at the Arrowhead Center.

The original ABA merged with the National Basketball Association in 1976. Some of the ABA’s most famous players were Julius Irving (Dr. J), George “The Iceman” Gervin, and Rick Barry. These and many others later played in the NBA.

The ABA was reformed in 2000 in partnership with the NBA.
