The Cordell Junior High Blue Devils gave fans plenty to cheer about Monday, September 21, battling the Hollis Tigers through four quarters and into overtime before falling 20-12.
The game was tied 12-12 at the end of regulation, sending the teams into overtime. Under the four-down overtime format, each team gets a possession and four downs to score rather than playing another timed quarter. Hollis was ultimately able to come out on top, handing Cordell the narrow eight-point loss.
The final score, however, hardly told the story of the night. The junior high Blue Devils showed plenty of heart and fight from beginning to end, refusing to slack as the game came down to the wire. Energy carried through the stadium as the crowd grew louder, the cheerleaders kept the sidelines pumped up, and Cordell kept battling for every yard.
Even after the overtime loss, Blue Devil fans made sure the team knew its effort and hard work had not gone unnoticed. Following the players’ postgame huddle, the crowd remained standing and applauded the boys as they left the field.
It may have gone into the record books as a loss, but it was the kind of game that gave Blue Devil fans plenty to be proud of.
The Junior High Blue Devils will return to the field Monday, September 28, when they take on the Snyder Cyclones.
