Baylor Moore, a Cordell High School freshman, made history this past weekend as Cordell’s first female wrestler to ever place at the State Tournament. Multiple wrestlers across the state battled February 22-24 at the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association State Wrestling Tournaments, Moore securing the fourth-place podium spot.

“Baylor was able to accomplish something that a lot of wrestlers spend four years trying to do. She accomplished it her first year in High school,” stated Cordell Wrestling Head Coach Jacolby Mitchell.

“She is one of the hardest workers I have in the room and comes in ready to continue to get better no matter what is asked. She spent all year going to another practice after leaving my practices, which shows the dedication she has to being the best wrestler she can be. She has accomplished two big goals this year, making it to state and placing, but now she will set her goal on winning it all the next three years! Being able to coach her this year has been everything a coach could ask for his first year as a head coach. I am honored to be a part of something as historic as that and hope we can continue with this success and eventually have it across the board in all sports and all levels!”

Moore embodies true character, determination, and sportsmanship and excels at making a name for herself. She has grown into an astounding athlete, and it’s only the beginning of her high school career and a glimpse of what is to come.

“Watching her four years ago not knowing a thing about wrestling, to now, in my opinion, a beast on the mat, it has been an amazing journey that I have loved watching along the way. She has several excellent coaches who pour their knowledge into her, and with her mindset of a never-quit attitude, it was an absolute dream come true when I saw her on the podium, especially since she is a Freshman. I’m beyond the stars proud of her and her accomplishments and can’t wait for what the future holds for her no matter what she does!” said Michael Moore.

Moore has continued to represent Cordell and showcase the athleticism within and outside the walls of Cordell Schools. Cordell community members were eager to express their proudness for the athlete and her accomplishments.

“I had many ups and downs this season between injuries and not placing how I wanted to, but in the end, I think I did pretty good for just being a freshman. Even though I didn’t place how I wanted to at some tournaments this season, I pushed through it anyways and kept my head held high, but hopefully next season, I can learn from mistakes and do better,” said Moore.

Moore completed her wrestling season with an awe-inspiring 14-4 high school record.
