Calling all Blue Devil fans, this Thursday through Saturday, January 18-20, marks the event you will want to attend. Cordell Public Schools is honored to host its first Cordell Classic basketball tournament.

“Our hope in creating and hosting the Cordell Classic is to create a competitive environment for our student-athletes that also brings visitors to our community. We at the school know how important our community is, and in starting this tournament, we hope that our town sees this as an investment in our future,” expressed Cordell Superintendent Travis Victory.

“Over the past five months, we have renovated our gym, including a new hardwood floor and score table, as well as updated and refreshed the lobbies and seating areas. Our hopes for this weekend are to put on a successful tournament that will continue to grow and become an annual community event. We know that putting on a tournament can have its challenges, and I want to thank the community and the Cordell Public Schools faculty and staff for their support,” stated Victory.

“We are excited to start a tournament of our own.

We have been working on our facilities, and this gives us a chance to show them. Cordell is a wonderful community, and it gives our kids a chance to play in front of family and friends. We also have had wonderful sponsors donate to help with cost and make it a yearly event,” said Cordell Boys Head Basketball Coach Vaughn Blankenship.

“Well, having a junior varsity and a varsity in the tournament is certainly interesting this year. Our varsity is the two-seed, and I think we have a shot at winning it if we play well. I think it would be really cool to win the tournament, especially since it is the first year it is being hosted. We have the talent to do so; we just need to play hard for a full four quarters each game and play our style to win it. My hope for our JV is to be competitive. I’m excited for those girls to get a ton of playing time and take on new roles this week. It will be a fun experience for them and will help the program long term by just getting those younger girls some big minutes,” stated Cordell Girls Head Basketball Coach Colby Love.

Fill the stands with Cordell Blue Devil pride and support during the first of many Cordell Classics. The first game of the Classic begins Thursday, January 18, at 11:00 a.m., Sweetwater vs. Cordell JV. See brackets on the Booster Page.
