Wesner elected to national post

Cordell native Brett Wesner, president of Wesner Publications in Cordell, was recently elected chair of the National Newspaper Association during the association’s 134th annual meeting. He had been treasurer. Wesner publishes 15 newspapers in Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico.

Virus numbers continue climb

The number of people in Washita County testing positive for COVID-19 rose again some during the past week, the Oklahoma State Health Department reported. The total number testing positive in the county is now 181. It was 154 a week ago, an increase of 27 over a week ago.

Chamber to Sponsor Spook the Square

Cordell’s Chamber of Commerce once again is sponsoring a Halloween Festival on Saturday, Oct. 31. Chamber of Commerce spokesperson Sarah Lau said that “Spook the Square” will begin at 6 p.m. and run through 10 p.m. “It’s the third year we’ve done it,” said Lau.

Beacon Names New Editor, General Manager

Veteran newspaperman Thomas R. Martinez is the new editor and general manager of the Cordell Beacon. Martinez’s first day was Oct. 19. “I am excited to have Thomas leading The Beacon,” said Publisher Brett Wesner.

Traffic Accident Injures 8

Eight persons suffered injuries in a two-vehicle traffic collision south of Burns Flat in Washita County last Friday, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported. State Trooper John Jones said only one of the eight injured was admitted to the hospital.

OFE Seeks Academic Award Nominees

The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence, a nonprofit organization that recognizes and encourages academic excellence in Oklahoma’s public schools, is seeking nominations for its 2021 Academic All-State Awards.
