Washita Co. Commissioners minutes

Now on the 8th day of April 2024, the County Commissioners in and for Washita County met in regular session with Chairman Goeringer calling the meeting to order. Chairman Goeringer asked Kristen Dowell, County Clerk, for roll call.

Hummingbirds arriving soon

Warmer weather means flowers will soon bloom, but it is not only colorful plants and shrubs that will appear in the landscape. Hummingbirds are expected to arrive in Oklahoma at any time.

Council approves City municipal pool details for 2024 season

During their meeting on Monday night, Cordell City Council set the municipal pool’s operating schedule as well as pool rules with a few changes from last year. If all goes as planned Cordell’s swimming pool will open on May 26th with a free swim day.

According to Bessie Fireman Matthew Georinger, on April 13, at approximately 7:15 PM, the Bessie Fire Department was paged to respond to a garage / shed fire at the Thompson residence.

Elementary Chorus hits all the right notes

On Saturday, April 6th, the 5th and 6th Grade Chorus, directed by Elizabeth Edge, competed in the Seiling Music Festival, hosted at Seiling Public Schools. These students worked incredibly hard preparing music for this event and their hard work paid off. The Cordell Elementary Chorus received a superior rating from the judges, which is the best rating they could have received on stage! Director Elizabeth Edge said “I am incredibly proud of them and their dedication to musical excellence. Be sure to come hear them in our upcoming concert! We invite you to spend your Friday night with us!” The Cordell Spring Choir Concert is April 19th at 6:00 p.m. in the Cordell School Auditorium.

Washita County candidate filing complete for June election

Oklahoma State Election Board’s official candidate filing period ran from April 3 - 5, and several Washita County positions up for election drew opponents. Current Washita County Clerk Kristen Dowell is being challenged by candidate Angie Strobel.

Pride of Cordell Marching Band continues its run of success

On March 29th the Cordell High School band had the honor of achieving the most prestigious award offered to bands in Oklahoma through the OSSAA “Sweepstakes.” The award is a multi-step process in which the competing band must earn a superior rating at the OSSAA Regional Marching Contest, District Concert Band Contest, and State Concert Band Contest. It is only given to those bands that receive an overall Superior rating from all contests, including the sightreading portion of the state competition.
