Cordell football coach Zane Trammell has been ruled out from coaching Friday’s second-round playoff game against Thomas because of a positive COVID-19 test.
“It’s really bad timing,” Trammell said. “I will not be participating Friday night. It is what it is. So yeah, that's kind of where we're at.”
Cordell schools superintendent Bob Overton confirmed, that as of Wednesday afternoon, the game was still scheduled to be played. He said no members of the team had shown any symptoms and it seemed to be limited to Trammell at this point.
Van Shea Iven, media relations director for the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association, said as long as the case is isolated to the coach, the game will go on.
If it was a case where Cordell had to quarantine a group of players and didn’t have enough to play the game, one of two things would have happened, Iven said.
First, the association would have offered Burns Flat-Dill City the opportunity to play, if that school wanted to. If not, the game would be forfeited, and Thomas would advance to the next round.
Defensive coordinator Dillon Ball will act as head coach in the game vs. Thomas, Trammell said.
“He's going to take over both roles this week,” Trammell said. “He’s got a good grasp of things, and I have faith in him. Trust me, he’ll be able to handle it.”
Trammell has been in contact with the team over the phone this week. His team will be ready to play.
“And that's what we're shooting for. Survive and advance, and hopefully, we'll all get to see another week together,” Trammell said.
Friday’s game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. in Thomas.
