Academic foundation teams with Mike’s Meats for fundraiser

If you like meat, the Cordell Academic Foundation has the deal for you. For its yearly fundraiser this year, the foundation has teamed with Mike’s Meats to offer a package for one lucky winner. The fundraiser each year helps give teachers items that don’t fit in the normal school district budget.

COVID-19 numbers continue steady rise

The Oklahoma State Department of Health reports that Washita County’s number of positive COVID-19 cases has continued to climb through the past week. The total number testing positive in the county is now 274. It was 220 a week ago, an increase of 54 over last week.

County reports COVID deaths

The District 5 county health departments, along with the Oklahoma State Department of Health, announced the first deaths associated with COVID-19 in Washita County. Both patients were men in the 65-plus age group. “This is a sad day in our community,” said Regional Director Brandie Combs.

Cordell Elementary students cast their votes on Nov. 3. Fifth- and sixth-grade social studies students helped create a mock election for the students to vote. Each student had their own Voter Identification card and were able to mark their own ballot on election day.

You still have time to apply for safe room grants

Washita County Emergency Manager Kenneth Trent is still taking applications for safe rooms for residents that reside in Washita County. The rebate is $2,000 through the grant. There needs to be 75 applicants to be able to apply for the grant.

Walter Swart is one of the area’s oldest World War II veterans. At 101, he’s still sharp as a tack. He remembers one of the best glasses of milk he ever had was when his ship returned from duty to San Francisco in 1945. The American Red Cross was there to greet the ship.
