Young golfers take a swing at summer fun

Crooked Creek Golf Course in Cordell wrapped up its Summer Junior Golf Program on Thursday, July 23, after another successful summer of introducing young golfers to the game.

More than 18 golfers ages 5-15 participated in the free program, which was held every Thursday from June 4 through July 23. Throughout the summer, participants received weekly instruction and practice focused on the fundamentals of golf, including skills, etiquette, and the rules of the game.

The program’s goals were to help young golfers develop confidence, sportsmanship, and positive attitudes while introducing them to the lifelong game of golf. The program also emphasized teamwork, discipline, and personal growth both on and off the course.

Instruction was led by Cordell High School Head Golf Coach JJ Williams with the help of Class 2A State Champion golfers MacKinlee Brunker and Mylee Brunker, along with Cordell High School boys golfer Jaxon Davis. It was especially rewarding to have these student-athletes return to help with the program since they were once junior golf participants themselves.

The program concluded with a three-hole team scramble tournament on July 23, allowing the young golfers to showcase what they learned throughout the summer in front of family and friends. Following the tournament, golfers received prizes before everyone enjoyed pizza courtesy of Mike’s Meats in Cordell and ice cream in the clubhouse.

The program was an outstanding success, with every golfer improving their skills while having fun learning the game. A special thank you goes to Valerie Farris and the volunteers at Crooked Creek Golf Course for their support throughout the summer. They also appreciate the generosity of the course members, local businesses, and individuals whose donations allowed every junior golfer to participate free of charge.

Junior golf programs are vital to growing the game and helping develop the next generation of golfers, and hopefully a few future state champions.
