Wheat harvest 2023 is winding down

After several rain delays and threats of hail, Washita County’s farmers are ready to wrap up wheat harvest.

The first load of wheat was brought into the Bessie Farmers Co-op on May 30th by Kevin and Slade Nightengale. Test weight on that load was 59.6 and moisture was 13.2 %.

Lloyd Miller delivered the first load to Wheeler Brothers Grain in Cordell. Test weight was 62 and Moisture was 13.5%.

Jon Wilson of the Cordell branch of the Bessie Farmers Co-op estimated that there is about a week left of harvest.

Wilson said wheat grades have declined some over the last few weeks due to excessive rain, but that it was still testing at acceptable levels.
