Washita County voters will have decisions to make in 2022 election

With the completion of the election candidate filing period on April 15th, two local races have developed.

Current Washita County Assessor Krystle Uecke is being challenged by Bessie resident Georgia Lawson. Floyd King and Greg Chandler are both seeking the District 3 County Commissioner seat being vacated by Steve Tompkins, who did not seek re-election.

Washita County Treasurer Sherry Nightengale filed unopposed in her position, as did District 1 County Commissioner Bart Gossen.

Current Washita County Associate District Judge Christopher S. Kelly is retiring at the end of the year and Assistant District Attorney Brooke Gatlin filed unopposed for that position.

Normally, U.S. Senate races have staggered six year terms, which leads to one seat being open one cycle, then the other two years later, with a third cycle of no race.

This election year happens to have both U.S. Senate seats open at the same time due to the retirement of Senator Jim Inhofe.

A large pool of 14 candidates is seeking Inhofe’s seat, while current Senator James Lankford faces 9 opponents for his seat.

Cordell resident Tad Boone has filed for the District 55 State Representative race and will face opponents Jeff Sawatzky and Nick Archer for the seat of departing Representative Todd Russ.

Russ is finishing his sixth and final term in the House and has filed for the office of State Treasurer.

The primary election will be held on June 28, primary runoff elections (if needed) will be August 23, and the general election is set for November 8, 2022.
