Volunteers prepare and deliver Christmas food boxes to area families

Each year the Cordell Ministerial Alliance organizes a drive to fill boxes with food and household necessities and distribute them to homes in the local area.

It requires quite an operation to get this done, but volunteers who participate year after year have the process down to a science, and they quickly show newbies the ropes.

On Saturday, Dec. 18th, volunteers gathered at the Washita County Activity Center to prepare the boxes. At first glance the scene seemed chaotic, but it was quickly apparent that it was actually an organized assembly line with a lot of fun camaraderie between folks.

While some workers labeled empty boxes with names and addresses of families and individuals that had been submitted through the Ministerial Alliance, others formed a line to place the appropriate allotment of canned goods, packaged food, and fruit into the boxes.

The line continued outside, where large bags of potatoes and other essentials completed the boxes. Each family also received a $30 gift card to Mike’s Meats.

Finally, it was time to load the boxes up for delivery. Volunteers quickly backed personal pickups and cars into position.

As the boxes were loaded each driver used their phones to snap a photo of the address label, and they were off! Many returned several times to pick up another load.of deliveries.

After about four hours, the process was complete.

The Ministerial Alliance provides valuable services to the community by helping families or individuals in need. It is made up of many area churches who pool their resources together in order to provide a helping hand.

You can help by attending events sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance such as the yearly Christmas Cantata and making a donation, or by checking with your local church to see who their point of contact is with the Alliance so that you may donate or volunteer.
