On any given weekday you can find an assortment of hungry diners enjoying lunch at the Cordell Senior Citizens Center meal site. All ages are welcomed, but it is the older generation who particularly value the time spent with a nourishing meal and the conversation of friends.
Even more importantly, volunteers arrive each day to load up the ‘to-go’ meals and deliver them to homebound folks that can’t make it to the meal site. Many of them are unable to prepare nutritious foods for themselves due to physical limitations. Some of them may not have any other human interaction throughout their day. The friendly faces of the volunteers are surely a bright spot for them.
The number of neighbors who need the facility’s help is at an all time high. The top priority is keeping them safe and nourished. Unfortunately, the cost of food is also at an all time high. As we all know, grocery prices are at unprecedented level.
According to meal site Board Member Keith Young, the bill for the food delivery is surpassing $2000 twice a month. This is considerably more than any other time in the Center’s history. Kitchen Manager Jennifer Etris uses all available resources and works hard to practice frugality to help keep the costs down, but the Senior Citizens Center is in crisis.
Donations are desperately needed to continue providing critical food and friendship to your friends and neighbors. If the facility is ever forced to close its doors, this lifeline will be cut.
If you have never visited the meal site, it is well worth the $7.00 cost for a delicious lunchand the good company is free. See the smiles and listen to the laughter of those who look forward to this time of fellowship. Listen to a story or two, and if you can, make a donation.
Any and all monetary donations are welcomed, needed, and very much appreciated. You may make your donation in person, or mail checks to Cordell Senior Citizens Center, 216 W. 1st St., Cordell, Ok 73632.
