Quick response by Cordell Fire Department saves local business

Local burger joint Shorty’s suffered a small amount of fire damage to the garage/warehouse at the left end of the building on Tuesday, August 16, located at 316 E. Main St., but the situation could have easily been much worse.

Cordell Fire Department’s (CFD) quick response and actions contained the fire and ultimately prevented more severe losses from occurring.

The owner of Shorty’s, Robert Venable Jr., said luckily no one was in the garage building and no one was hurt as a result. The fire started above an office space in the garage/warehouse.

“The fire was called in at 12:26 p.m., controlled at 12:34 and [CFD] cleared it at 2:08. That was really fast, I mean their response time was quick from the time they got the call,” expressed Venable.

Fortunately, the physical damage of the building, as stated, is minimal, repairable and mostly located around the front corner.

Venable said that there were some items that were lost; however, they are still going through things to see what is a total loss and what may still be salvageable.

As of now, the fire is being labeled as incidental and damage estimates are still being assessed.

“We’d just really like to thank the community and the businesses that had put something together to offer us help,” said Venable.
