Meet the Principal: Kenny Horn to head Cordell Elementary

As this school year is coming to a close and a new one approaches, Cordell Elementary students can expect to be greeted by a new friendly face.

Starting in the fall of 2022, Kenny Horn will take over as Cordell Elementary Principal following the departure of Mike Higgins.

Horn is coming to Cordell from Buffalo, OK where he has been the PreK-12 principal for Buffalo Public Schools for the last eight years. Horn is no stranger to the small town life.

“Cordell and Buffalo are the same in that they are both small, rural schools which is what I enjoy. Cordell will be different for me for the mere fact of having separate sites and administrators for the elementary and high school. In Buffalo I am the only principal for PreK-12th. Also, Cordell has more students just in the elementary than I currently have in my entire district,” said Horn.

Horn graduated from Yukon High School in 1989. For five years after graduating high school, Horn served in the US Coast Guard. Following his retreat from the military, Horn went on to pursue his Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. After some time had passed, he proceeded to achieve his Master’s of Education Administration from Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) in Weatherford.

Altogether Horn has accumulated an astounding 24 years in education. Horn spent his first 10 years of teaching expanding the minds of students in second, third, fourth and fifth grade. He went on to challenge and better students in sixth through eighth grade for six years. “My hopes are to be accepted as a member of the Cordell Blue Devils family (Go Blue!). I am excited by this opportunity and can’t wait to be there. From what I’ve seen so far, Cordell Elementary and the district as a whole have a lot of great things happening and I just want to help keep that momentum going. I feel my role is to support the staff, students, and families in their endeavors and goals any way I can,” expressed Horn. With having a son who is a junior at SWOSU and a daughter who will be attending Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva in the fall, Horn and his wife are excited to be members of the Cordell community this summer. Horn continued with, “My hope is to stay at Cordell until I retire. I am 51 now and plan on staying in education another 14 or 15 years. My wife and I both like what we’ve seen of the school and community and can see ourselves staying there until we retire and beyond.”
