Mask mandate ends in Cordell

The city of Cordell no longer has a mask mandate.

The city council considered extending the mandate during its March 15 meeting, but it failed with a 4-2 vote

Because two council members were absent during the meeting, the council didn’t have enough “yes” votes to pass the ordinance.

“According to Oklahoma State statutes, to pass an ordinance you must have a majority of all council members, not a majority of the quorum. That means we needed 5 for it to pass,” Cordell City Administrator J.C. Moser said.

The original ordinance was passed in November 2020, and the city council extended it through the end of March at its January meeting. But the ordinance actually ended when Gov. Kevin Stitt ended the emergency declaration regarding COVID-19, Moser said, though Stitt’s ruling did leave mask ordinances up to individual cities and towns.
