Many homes left without power after truck tears through electrical lines

Late Sunday afternoon a semi truck allegedly bound for California somehow ended up in a residential area of Cordell and caused a dangerous situation that resulted in many homes in the northwest part of town being left without electricity until the early morning hours Monday.

The truck and trailer caught on electrical lines above the street and pulled down multiple utility poles. This in turn caused an aerial fire near the Wheeler Brothers Grain facility. City of Cordell Electrical Department workers spent the evening and most of the night repairing the damage.

Police Chief Dustin Denney told the Beacon “At this time the accident is still under investigation. The trucking company has been in contact with the Officer working the case and has provided information that has assisted in the investigation. The driver was arrested for leavening the scene of a property damage accident.”

Chief Denney continued, “The quick response by the citizens in area, The City Of Cordell Employees and the Washita County Sheriff’s Office was amazing. We are happy to report there were no injuries.”

The Beacon will provide an update and further details when the investigation is complete.
