Local tattoo shop owner Rachel Jones thinks ‘outside the box’ with her many ways to contribute to the community. In this case, however, her idea just happens to be ‘inside the box.’ The Blessing Box, to be exact.
Jones currently owns and operates Wookies Tattoo and Body Piercing in Cordell. Her shop was previously located in Mannsville, Oklahoma, and that is where the Blessing Box idea was born. Jones saw a need and figured out a way to fill it. She created a box that would be open 24/7 and would contain food and hygiene necessities. Now, her shop in Cordell has a bright red box right in front that holds free items for anyone in need.
“I think it makes a huge impact on the community because there are a lot of times when people do need help, or maybe its midnight and they just got home from work, and they don’t have food for themselves or their children,” Jones said. “If there’s not enough in the box, come inside and talk to me. I will help you with whatever you need.”
Jones strives to spread kindness and positivity. When it comes to the Blessing Box, she says “Take what you need, and give when you can.”
Jones says donations can consist of anything that the weather won’t hurt, since the box is located outside her shop. Items needed include canned food items, formula, baby food, and hygiene items. Cash donations are accepted as well.
Jones tries to bundle items together that can create an easily made meal. Examples of this would be canned meat, spaghetti sauce and a pack of noodles, or tuna, cream soup, and a bag of pasta. If you donate a box of macaroni and cheese, including a can of milk would be helpful for someone who may not have other items to use in preparation.
Wookies Tattoo and Body Piercing and the Blessing box are located in Cordell at 210 E. 1st Street, between Market Street and Glenn English. You can bring donations inside when the shop is open.
