On Friday, Feb. 4, at 4:58 p.m. Cordell Fire Department (CFD) responded to a structure fire at Dazed and Confused Cannabis Company located at 122 N Glenn English in Cordell.
CFD sent out two engines and two brush trucks to begin containing the fire. Area fire departments from Sentinel, Bessie, Clinton, Cloud Chief, Rocky and Burns Flat-Dill City came to assist.
“There was heavy smoke coming from the south part of the building,” said CFD Fire Chief Seth Slaughterback.
The dispensary building suffered severe smoke damage but no initial fire damage. The backroom connected to the dispensary’s storage building that is utilized as a break room was completely destroyed by the fire.
“Towards the west in the back of the [storage] building, is where the fire started due to a circuit overload,” stated Slaughterback.
Ventilation crews were sent onto the roof to cut two large diameter ventilation holes. In order to control and put out the rest of the fire, the CFD utilized vertical ventilation.
“It was hard to navigate through with all the heavy smoke but once we got our ventilation hole and the smoke started to lift. We were able to locate the fire and were able to start to fight it and get it put out. The training we did at the live burn really helped me in this situation and helped me look for things as I was going through the building,” said Cordell Firefighter Donald Mitchell.
In the break room were several personal items of Zach Bynum, his girlfriend and their son Cache. Unfortunately, there were pets in there as well.
Zach Bynum, son of Dazed and Confused owner Jesse Bynum, sustained several scratches to his face and second degree burns to his hands that required medical attention.
Jesse said they are planning to re-open as soon as they can. “I just want to say thank you to the fire departments and thank you to everyone that has donated to help us and my son Zach,” said Bynum.
