City of Cordell awarded MODA grant for beautification

The City of Cordell has been approved for a grant through MODA (Midwestern Oklahoma Development Authority) for its Downtown Beautification Project. The grant amount of $25,000 must be equally matched by the city, which was approved as a budget item during the budget hearing last month.

Representatives from the city will reach out to corporate partners, small businesses, and interested individuals for monetary and in-kind pledges to complete the projected cost of around $110,000.

The Downtown Beautification Project’s objective is to stimulate downtown development and enhance the visual image downtown in order to instill a sense of pride within the community and to provide a welcoming presence for visitors and potential business owners.

A professional landscaper will install suitable materials which will provide continuous blooms and beauty throughout the growing season. Twenty-one flower beds and thirty-six ‘bump out’ concrete bordered planting areas will be renovated. The last time the downtown streetscape had any substantial visual improvements was over twenty years ago.

Also on the radar of the Project is the pocket park across from the Washita Theater, which will be refurbished with an improved water feature and décor as funds allow.
