Brother and Sister duo bake their way to success in state baking contest

Korben and Bailey Gossen from Corn recently placed first in three classes in the Junior Division at the State “Best of Wheat” Bread Baking contest held at the OSU Oklahoma County Cooperative Extension Conference Center.

Only three entries could be sent from Washita County, so it is a particular honor that all three entries took first place.

Sister Bailey Gossen placed 1st place in the Junior Sweet Breads with her Raspberry Braid Bread. Korben Gossen placed 1st place in the Junior Specialty Shape Breads with his Grand Ol’ Flag Bread and Bread Machine Bread – Easy As Can Be in the Bread Machine class. This is the third year in a row that Korben has won the Bread Machine class.

The contest is an annual event sponsored by the Oklahoma Wheat Commission and Oklahoma State Fair.

“We had 113 entries from 39 counties this year, all champion or reserve champion winners in the county contests,” said David Gammill, Vice-Chairman of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission. “Even though the contest was closed judging this year, we were able to stream the contest live via Zoom and always enjoy the opportunity to award the top bread bakers in the state.”

A cookbook with the top 5 recipes of every class from the Best of Wheat competition will be available on-line in January 2022 at www.okwheat.org.

The Oklahoma Wheat Commission promotes greater utilization of wheat in both domestic and international markets through research, market development and public education.
