McKee honored for his time on the Cordell School Board
After 12 years, Cordell School Board member Ronnie McKee has retired from the board and was recognized by the administration.
McKee said he had always had an interest in joining the school board, and after some encouragement from those around him and talking it over with his family he decided he should run. He was elected in March of 2009.
“Not that anything was wrong with the school system, but I just saw an opportunity to maybe improve and to continue the tradition that Cordell has had over the years,” McKee said.
McKee was recognized by the board during this month’s school board meeting on Monday, April 12.
“It has been a pleasure working with Ronnie over the past 12 years. Cordell Schools has been able to make numerous improvements to facilities as well as academic programs during his time on the board,” Cordell Public School Superintendent Brad Overton said. “Ronnie carries a true passion for the students and faculty of Cordell Schools. I thank him for his service.”
McKee said some of his most notable accomplishments were those that included the advancements in technology for the school and its students. Particularly looking at the creation of the STEM building as the most notable.
“When you look at the world in society today, it’s all moving toward technology. If we don’t get the kids involved, somewhere down the road I feel like they would have lost out,” McKee said.
During his recognition at the board meeting this month, the board recognized that McKee’s “thought process and words in the boardroom were reflective of a leader that always put students first.”
These words were reflected in Mckee’s advice to any persons currently on the board or thinking of running for the board in the future.
“Keep in mind that whatever decisions you make, make sure that it’s for the kids and the administration. Don’t let personal feelings come into play,” McKee said. “Always look at the whole picture for the kids. What’s best for the kids, school, and administration, that’s what needs to be focused on.”
The board also acknowledged McKee’s service to the Cordell Public School District saying that it “will have a lasting impact on the faculty and staff of Cordell Schools but most importantly a lasting impact on the lives of numerous students over his twelve years of service.”
McKee said that his favorite part of being a member of the board was getting to be a part of a group of people that had the same goals and principles in mind so that the schools could continuously improve in all aspects.
“We have the best school system in the state. I appreciate each and every one of [the administration and faculty members] for my years on the school board,” McKee said. “I wish them the best and I appreciate each one of them. I wish them good luck.”
Looking ahead, McKee said he looks forward to spending his free time traveling with his wife, fishing, and spending time taking care of his grandkids.
Although he’s now retired from the board, McKee with a laugh in his voice said the board will still be seeing him around.
“I told them when I left the other day that I’d still come and see them and bend their ears. So they’re not getting rid of me. Cordell is my hometown, so I’m not going anywhere.”
