Cordell’s cowboy poet Lavern “Straw” Berry will be featured On April 27th in a western artist collaborative at Cowboy Hill, a performance venue near Binger.
Berry grew up in west central Oklahoma on a ranch in Washita County. He was part of the third generation of Berrys to live and work on the ranch owned by Mr. Jiggs Botchlett. He has written cowboy poetry for almost 25 years and has performed at the Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the National Cowboy Poetry Gath- ering in Elko and the Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering in Ft. Worth. He has recorded two cd’s, Red Hill Reflections and Strawberry Preserved, and is working on a book of original poetry.
Also being featured at the show at Cowboy Hill is Danny Steagall, a musician whose career has spanned three decades. Fronting the highly acclaimed western swing band, the Coleman County Cowboys, Steagall has toured the world and earned the respect of his contemporaries as an accomplished musician and stylist.
Living in Nashville in the late 80’s, Steagall made a name for himself as a songsmith in major publishing circles with cuts on popular artists such as Conway Twitty, Gretchen Wilson and Merle Haggard.
Steve Story will be joining Danny Steagall. He has played with Red Steagall & the Boys in the Bunkhouse, Ricky Van Shelton, Ray Price, George Strait, and others, and has over 500 shows with the late, great Glenn Campbell.
Cowboy Hill, LLC was formed near Binger, Oklahoma to help preserve the cowboy and Western culture and lifestyle by David McCall and Deanna Dickinson McCall.
Deanna McCall is a western writer, and has won many awards for her poetry, songwriting, and prose. They sold their ranch in New Mexico and have made Caddo County their home. They have always worked to preserve the cowboy and ranching way of life and opening up the venue of Cowboy Hill, LLC on their place is another step in that direction.
“We are exposing people to a lifestyle and culture along with giving long-standing fans opportunities to join us. We are setting up classes now that will include things like writing workshops, cowboy cooking, musical instrument workshops, and considering handicap riding for children as well as the concert performances,” Deanna says.
Their first show of the season is on April 27th at 7:00 p.m. The venue is located 8 miles west and 1 mile north of Binger, Oklahoma. The suggested donation for admission is $20 for adults, $35 for couples, and kids under 12 are considered free.
