Cordell’s Pumpkin Festival is almost here, and one of the most memorable and fun traditions associated with the Chamber of Commerce’s annual event is the Bed Races.
After a haitus of several years, the Chamber brought the Bed Races back in 2022. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s, this contest was one of the most highly anticipated parts of the Pumpkin Festival.
If you don’t know what it is, the Bed Races competition consists of teams of five persons who push one team member in a modified ‘hospital bed’ down Market Street in front of the Washita Theater. The bed-riding team member must jump out of bed, make a mad dash into a shaky outhouse, dress in sleeping attire, and jump back into bed to allow the rest of the team to race them back to the starting point. Hilarity often ensues as there are plenty of ways this plan can go awry.
