BACK IN ACTION

BLUE DEVILS TAKE A LOSS BUT NEVER LOSE HEART

The Cordell Blue Devils kicked off the 2022 football season last Friday night with a short road trip to Sayre to take on the Eagles. The Devils fought hard from kick off to the final horn. They never backed down and they took the fight to Sayre for the entire evening.

Cordell fields a young team this year. Many are first year starters. Some have had a little playing time throughout the last couple of seasons. Some are brand new to the game. With low numbers and lots of injuries, it is times like these that a team must look to familiar faces with game experience. It is times like these when you find out who is cut from the leadership material.

Junior Danny Corbin has done it and he has seen it. Danny made the move to quarterback this summer from receiver and running back and has taken control of this offense. It has been a big transition for him, but he thrives on competition. Danny had 78 yards passing with a touchdown on the night.

Senior JD Maddox is another one of those guys that you love to have in the huddle. JD is one of the more vocal leaders and does his best to lead by example. He is one of the key components that makes the offense run. JD had two catches for 66 yards receiving, but he also ran the ball as well.

First year receiver, Junior Jordan Wood caught the lone touchdown of the night on a roll out by Corbin. His 12-yard grab was an amazing, onehanded, toe touch in the back of the endzone.

Sophomore Dayton Bartlett had two carries for 11 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Cordell held Sayre to zero passing yards.

This Friday, the Blue Devils will travel to Merritt to take on the Oilers. Kick off is set for 7:00 Talking to head coach Cody Gilmore, previewing Merritt this week, “Merritt is going to be a challenge for us. They have good size up front and they have a decent Quarterback and Receiver. We are going to have to play team defense this week.”

The Devils have started this week working hard and will continue to practice and put the time and effort in to getting better each day.
