The Cordell Lady Blue Devils traveled to Walters last week to face another band of Lady Blue Devils in the first round of district tournament play. Despite exceptional defensive play, however, Cordell’s girls were outmatched by the Walters Lady Blue Devils, and were eliminated in the first round with a 38-16 loss.

The first quarter was all defense, with both teams struggling to score. Walters managed four points and Cordell three, all of which were from the free-throw line. The second quarter was more of the same, although the Walters girls managed to score eight points to Cordell’s two, making the halftime score a managable 12-5. With both of Cordell’s points coming from the charity stripe.

Walters started pulling away in the third quarter, despite Cordell getting on the scoreboard with their first, and only, field goal of the game - a three-pointed from Renee Javorsky that pushed the score to 20-8 in favor of Walters. The Walters girls kept up the pressure through the final period, and left the court with a 38-16 victory.

Cordell head coach Jana Rogers said that despite the loss, she was proud of her team and she’s looking forward to seeing their growth take shape next season.

“Well, it didn’t work out the way we had hoped,” she said. “We struggled to score all night. Walters was very aggressive and had us on our heels all night. We were able to keep it in reach until the fourth quarter. We played great defense, but just could not get our offense going.

“In the end I was proud of the improvement the girls made throughout the year. We knew it was going to be a growing year and were were just hoping that by the end we would be more ready. Unfortunately that didn’t happen for us, but we do have a good core group coming back. I felt that we had several players make big strides in their game that will be something to build on for next year.”

Rogers also praised the work of her two seniors, Kamdyn Davis and Makenzie Hougland.

“As for the seniors, Kamdyn and Makenzie, we will greatly miss them,” she said. “I have been very proud of their commitment to the program over their entire careers. They both came and worked hard every day and had great attitudes. I will always remember Makenzie for her ‘team first’ attitude. She was always willing to do whatever the team needed to help prepare them for each game. Kamdyn was a two-year starter for us and a tremendous three-point shooter. She was our leading scorer in many games this year. I thought she had a great senior year, it was just unfortunate for both seniors that our season ended so soon.”
