The Lady Blue Devils had a rough week on the softball field, dropping three games on the road.

“We lost three games last week but we’re getting better defensively,” said head coach Bobby Blackburn. “Kara Dowell is really playing well at first base. Our outfield is really making strides. Last Wednesday we used the pitching machine at the field. We had both outfield and infield taking fly balls off of it.”

The week started with a Monday visit to Sentinel, where the Lady Blue Devils fell to the Lady Bulldogs in blistering heat, 20-0. Tuesday’s scheduled game against Mangum was canceled due to heavy morning rain.

On Thursday, Cordell’s girls traveled to Arapahoe-Butler to face the Lady Bisons of Leedey in the opening round of the Arapahoe-Butler tournament. The Lady Devils fell 12-0 in the run-ruled contest after three innings to set up a Friday morning game against the hosting Lady Indians.

But the weather struck again, pushing Friday’s game off until Saturday morning.

The Lady Devils battled hard against Arapahoe-Butler, but an eightrun second inning sealed the victory for the home team. After four innings, the game ended with a 10-0 score on a time-limited game.

“In Saturday’s game Renee Javorsky, Shelby Nance, and Tristan Reimer combined to catch four out of four fly balls,” Blackburn said. “One one of those, Shelby threw to Kenlee Dodd who relayed it to Kamdyn Davis at third base to tag a runner who had tagged up. So, I am very pleased with our defensive improvement. At the plate is another story. We still aren’t disciplined enough to lay off bad pitches. I think we will develop as we get more at bats. We have to find a way to get on, get over, and get in.”
