Cordell’s Lady Blue Devils struggled through a tough week of basketball last week, losing at home to Carnegie and on the road to the Lady Eagles of Sayre.

The girls started off strong against Carnegie, hitting some early shots and firing up the crowd with their energy. But then Carnegie’s girls, always a powerhouse team, took over and outran the Lady Devils to the finish line with a final score of 67-28.

“Well, Tuesday was not a great game for us,” said head coach Jana Rogers. “We had a great start but since they started hitting shots we couldn’t match them. We are going to have to do a better job of slowing the game down and playing better defense.”

The Lady Devils took that lesson on the road Saturday against the Lady Eagles of Sayre. Cordell’s girls played much stronger defense and held the Sayre girls to just 39 points. The offense still struggled at times, though, and Cordell came up on the short end of a 39-27 scoreboard.

“We did play a much better game versus Sayre,” Rogers said. “We kept them below 40 points for the night, which was our goal. We made a great run in the fourth quarter, but came up short. I was proud of our efforts and doing what we need to do to be successful. We still have to do a better job of taking care of the ball. We gave up too many easy layups off turnovers.”

The Lady Devils next take to the court Thursday at 1:40 p.m. against Luther in the Great Plains Bank Tri-County Tournament at Western Oklahoma State College in Altus.
