The Cordell Lady Blue Devils fought through a tough week last week, losing two games to Snyder and one to Burns Flat-Dill City as they head into the last two weeks of their season.

The ladies opened the week at home against a powerhouse Snyder team on Tuesday and lost 12-0, but head coach Bobby Blackburn, as he’s said all season, isn’t measuring his team by the final score. He’s focused on steady improvement heading into the playoffs, and his team is showing definite improvement with each passing game.

“Andrea Palmer threw the ball well, but we played sloppy on defense,” he said. “We’ve got to correct some little things that tend to add up. We hit the ball well today, but right at them.”

The Lady Devils traveled to Sentinel Thursday for tournament play and opened against neighboring Burns Flat-Dill City. Despite the final score of 10-1, which included two BF-DC home runs, Cordell’s girls showed a lot of improvement in their game.

“We showed improvement but they just hit the ball well,” Blackburn said. “Kamdyn Davis continued to make some big plays at third. Abby Bowley is new this year and has had to overcome some illness but she’s making a hand in centerfield for us. Paige Canterberry moved to the lead-off spot and she’s hitting really well.”

Cordell’s final game of the week was Saturday morning’s elimination game, a rematch with the Snyder team that beat them earlier in the week. The Lady Devils did a much better job of hitting the ball in this outing, but stranded runners left the girls on the losing end of a 12-0 scoreboard.

“Still leaving runners stranded is our theme right now,” Blackburn commented. “We have to do better with situational hitting. We are doing a much better job of getting on, getting over, but not getting in. Paige continued to swing a hot bat with a single and a double, Kamdyn singled, and Kara Dowell singled. We have two weeks left and some very tough district opponents, but we intend to improve and compete to the best of our abilities.”
