The Cordell Blue Devils Football Team made a triumphant return to the 2020 season, winning Friday night’s game by a landslide, 42-0 over Walters.

A positive COVID-19 test from a Cordell player upended the Blue Devils season three weeks ago. More than half of the team was placed into quarantine and two Devil games were canceled. This separation along with the recent ice storm limited the team to about one and a half practices before its game in Walters.

The Cordell boys were still well conditioned with only a little rust coming into the game, head coach Zane Trammell said.

The team played a very physical ballgame, missing very few tackles and successfully stopping the Walters Blue Devils from scoring a single point.

Senior Raydon Kuehne kicked off the game for Cordell, driving his team deep into Walters territory. The Walters Blue Devils made many attempts to push Cordell back, but were unable to succeed. Senior Dane Corbin intercepted a pass made by the Walters team early in the quarter, driving the ball 8 yards toward the end zone.

Corbin pushed forward relentlessly on the following play, rumbling another 8 yards down the field.

Walters’ poor field position, coupled with a 15-yard penalty, gave Corbin the perfect opportunity to fly right into the endzone, scoring the first touchdown of the game and setting the tone for the rest of the night.

This was followed by a successful extra point kick from Kuehne, which brought the score to 7-0, with 8:07 left in the quarter.

Cordell held Walters for the remainder of the quarter, repeatedly stopping their attempts to advance.

The Cordell Blue Devils showed no mercy in the second quarter, scoring four touchdowns, and three extra ponts. Corbin scored the second touchdown of the game with a 40-yard run, bringing the score to 14-0 with 10:58 left in the half. Senior Bode Gallagher scored the third touchdown, running full speed into the endzone with his defender latched onto his waist.

As the quarter progressed, the Cordell team continued to crack down harder on Walters, getting more aggressive and scoring their next two touchdowns within one minute of each other. Cordell’s fourth touchdown was scored by Corbin.

The fifth touchdown was a 40-yard interception touchdown made by Kuenhe, who also successfully kicked the extra points following the third, fourth, and fifth touchdowns. Cordell led at halftime, 34-0.

The Cordell boys scored eight more points in the last four minutes of the third quarter. The sixth touchdown of the game was made by Junior Blaine Larsen and was followed by a successful twopoint conversion from senior Adden Zanghi. The score at the end of the third quarter was 42-0.

The Cordell boys battered their opponents for the remaining quarter of the game, holding the Walters Blue Devils to zero points and maintaining their 42-point lead.

Trammell was pleased with how Cordell performed in this game, specifically highlighting seniors Raydon Kuehne, Gavin Jasmer, and Cameron Cochran, who “played very well,” along with junior Blaine Larsen, who “does a lot of hard work without getting a lot of glory.”

The Cordell boys will play their final game of the season next Friday at home against the Mangum Tigers. The results of this game will be used to determine Cordell’s seat in the district playoffs.

Trammell told The Beacon, “it’s looking like we are going to get fourth if we win, and fifth if we lose.” If the Devils beat Mangum in Friday’s game, they will host their playoff game, if not they will play on the road against their opponent.
