It’s not basketball season in Cordell without the delicious smells and tastes coming from the arena concession stand, run by Bob and Charlinda Ogle.

During this basketball season, The Cordell Beacon is going to introduce a new feature: the Concession Stand Food Review. As I travel to the various arenas to watch the Blue Devils and Lady Blue Devils compete, I’ll sample the food at each concession stand and provide my review for your enjoyment. I hope you enjoy reading about the food as much as I enjoy eating it.

My first food item for review was not my first choice. Our 107 The Zone friends, broadcasters Dudley Simpson and Mike Southerland, recommended I try a baked potato topped with barbecued beef from the Ogles’ kitchen, but by the time halftime rolled around at the girls’ game the concession stand was out of potatoes. Fear not, basketball food fans, I will have a review of this tasty-sounding delight in next week’s paper!

In the end I had to settle for a Cordell cheeseburger, although I don’t think settle is the correct word to use in regard to this deliciousness. In order to get the full, unadulterated flavor, I ordered the burger plain and dry, no condiments, no toppings - just a burger with cheese on a bun.

In all honesty, it really doesn’t take much to make a good cheeseburger - if you’re doing a few of them on your own grill. Making enough burgers to feed an arena full of hungry basketball fans, however, is an entirely different matter. And Bob Ogle has figured out the secret recipe. We were more than an hour and a half into the games that night, after watching the JV play and the first half of the high school Lady Devils, but the burger tasted like it had just come off the grill. It was juicy and delicious and hit the spot almost as well as I imagine the potato I’d been thinking about all afternoon would have.

I’ll also be traveling to Hobart Friday to watch the Blue Devils and Lady Blue Devils match up against the Bearcats. Remember, I’m new to Oklahoma, so I need your help. Send an email to editor@cordellbeacon.com to make your suggestions of which food items I should review during upcoming games.
