In a riveting battle against the Burns-Flat Dill City Eagles, The Cordell Blue Devil Football Team came out on top, beating the Eagles by eight points.

The game started off strong, with the Burns-Flat Dill City Eagles matching the Devil’s effort. An Eagle touchdown in the first quarter pushed the Devils to play harder, this resulted in a Devil touchdown and a field goal, both scored by Senior Raydon Kuehne.

Cordell came out swinging in the second half, holding the eagles at six points. Late in the fourth quarter Junior Cale McCoy recovered a kickoff on the Blue Devil’s 14 yard line leading to Senior Dane Corbin scoring a touchdown followed by yet another beautiful field goal from Raydon Kuehne. Flying around on defense the Cordell Blue Devils stopped the Eagles from landing another touchdown, ending the game with a score of 14 to 6.

Head Coach Zane Trammell told The Beacon, “this win feels good, we got the elephant off our back with this first win” he said, “we knew these first three non-district games were all gonna be pretty similar, but we’ve been working hard on eliminating a lot of our mistakes.”

Trammel chalks the win up to a “strong offensive line” he said, “up front is where we shined tonight, offensively for a couple of plays we dominated the line of scrimmage, and those were the two drives that we ended up scoring on.”

Coach highlighted the performance of two seniors: Adden Zanghi, for flying around with the ball defensively and running the ball hard offensively; and Dane Corbin, for continuing to run the ball well.

Senior Lineman Gavin Jasmer told The Beacon, “Tonight we played harder than we have at the past two games, we played well and didn’t have any stupid mistakes.” He said, “We knew BF-DC was gonna give us a good game so we did what Coach Ball told us to do ‘fly around, pin our ears back, and hit someone in the mouth’.”

This is a monumental win for The Cordell Blue Devil Senior Boys, it being the first homecoming win in their high school careers.

Next week the boys will have a “bye week” meaning they will not play against another team. According to Coach, the boys will spend this time cleaning up some mistakes made in this game, improving the play chart, and getting their feet back underneath them.

On September 25, the boys will play on the road against the Hobart Bearcats, kickoff is at 7:00 P.M. The theme for the Hobart game is “Luau” so be sure to wear Hawaiian shirts and leis to show your spirit while supporting our Blue Devil Boys.

In other sports news, The Cordell Lady Blue Devil Softball Girls were unable to bring home a win in Saturday’s tournament, held in Hobart.

The Softball girls played two games, one against the Sentinel Bulldogs, and the other against the BFDC Lady Eagles.

The score for the game against Sentinel was 14-1, and for BFDC 20-0.
