In an effort to continue to add things for Cordell residents to enjoy in town, city council members have begun their efforts to begin the construction of a splash pad for kids of Cordell to enjoy.

This project has been a topic of discussion amongst the council during previous months’ meetings, and now council members have formed a committee and are ready to get to work as they take head of the project.

Zetta Penner, Earlene Smith, and Buddy Holman are the council members apart of the committee in charge of the project, and in speaking with the Cordell Chamber of Commerce council member Penner said they have “been going gung-ho ever since Tuesday night” when the council met to discuss the start of this project.

“When we first started, I was envious of, my husband grew up in Corn, and Corn built theirs and it’s beautiful, it’s so neat,” Penner said when speaking with Chris Kelly on the chamber of commerce radio show. “I went out and looked at it and I thought, if Corn can have one, we need one really bad.”

Plans for the splash pad include having it built on the east side of the swimming pool across the road in Cordell and will span 50 by 50 feet.

Currently, council members have included a rendering of what the splash pad will include and things such as a water dumping bucket, water mushroom, and rain curtain.

“We’re going to have different sprays all over the court. If you walk out on it, you’re going to get wet,” Penner said with a laugh. “If mothers go out to grab their child, you’re going to get wet. You might as well plan on it.”

Plans for the construction of the project are all ready to go although Penner said they are missing one final thing: the money.

Committee members are currently campaigning to raise funds for the project and have set up plans for collecting donations.

Donations can be made through a form provided by the committee and the business or personal name of those who donate $100 or more will be placed on a plaque at the splash pad location.

Other plans to raise funds include donation jars around town in different businesses, a booth at the Pumpkin Festival, and a bank account that will be set up to make direct deposits to.

Penner said she hopes the project can be done before next summer, however, there is no current date on when the project can be done until funds have been raised.

If you would like to make a donation or have any questions about the project, you can contact either council member Penner at 580-660-0579, Smith at 580-660-6111, or Holman at 580-302-1706.

“We want the people of Cordell to get involved and want to be a part of it. Any donations, we’d love to have them.”
