Annual Blue Devil Pie Auction this Thursday
Get ready to meet the players as Cordell Schools ramps up this year’s pie auction event.
Meet the Players is a fundraiser for the Cordell football players and cheerleaders that is held each year, and it is put on by cheerleading coach Alisa Boeker and this year’s junior high sponsor Brandi Eldridge.
“It’s a chance for the community to come out,” Boeker said. “Each football player and cheerleader will introduce themselves, tell who their parents are, what grade they’re in, what position they play.”
The event is set up as an auction where attendants are able to bid on a pie that gives them the chance to “pie” a player or cheerleader in the face. A chance to pie the coaches are auctioned off as well.
This event gives Cordell residents a chance to come out and see this year’s football and cheerleading roster while also providing a fun opportunity for families.
“It’s always kind of fun to get to see a mom or a dad or brother or sister or somebody smash a plate of whipped cream in a kid’s face, they enjoy that,” Boeker said. “The kids enjoy it too, and they kind of want to be bought.”
The funds raised are used for both football players and cheerleaders in order to provide them with meals after games, team uniforms, and any equipment that they might need.
According to Boeker, past events have raised thousands of dollars with the cheerleaders and football players raising an average of roughly $3000 and $6000 respectively.
Boeker also said that the event gives the players and cheerleaders a chance to meet and socialize amongst each other.
“It’s a time for them all to come together and make sure they know each other and meet each other,” she said.
Meet the Players will take place at the Blue Devil Stadium on Thursday, August 12 at 7 p.m., and all are welcome to attend.
“We would love for everybody to come out, and even if you’re not buying a player or cheerleader, just come out and see who the kids are and get the school year kicked off,” Boeker said. “It’s a nice little way to get started back to school.”
Coming up, residents can look forward to enjoying Cordell’s first football home game on Friday, August 27 at 7 p.m. against Sayre.
