Earlier this month the Cordell School Board decided on who would fill the two recently vacated board member positions.

After being approached by members of her community, Misty Gossen decided to apply to the board and is now one of two board members appointed to the school board.

The Cordell Beacon had the chance to talk with Gossen to discuss being chosen as one of the board’s newest members.

How does it feel to have been chosen? Are you ready to start working for the people of Cordell?

I am excited to serve and I’m ready to devote my time and energy to public education and what it means to our community.

What is it that made you want to apply? Had you ever thought about running for the school board position in the past?

I hadn’t ever thought about applying in the past, but several members in the community approached me.

After much thought, I decided it would [be] a way to have a voice and make a positive impact within our school system.

Do you currently see any immediate issues that the board should tackle?

I do not, much like Levi said I am ready to jump in and learn as much as I can while making a positive impact.

You’ll be on the board until April of next year, do you have any broader long-term plans that you hope to accomplish during your term?

I have no agenda, just looking out for the best interest of our school.

Come April, do you think you’ll run for the position then? What’s that future look like for you?

My plans are to file for school board unless something changes in the future preventing me to do so.

We’re about four months in since the election for board members took place, how does it feel coming onto the board at this time?

I don’t feel I am behind or have a disadvantage by just getting appointed.

I stay involved with our school system as a community member and as a parent with [two] children who attend Cordell Schools.

What do you expect going into the position will be like? Do you have any experiences that you think will help you fulfill these new duties?

Being a small business owner and a parent, I believe my qualifications will help me fulfill this role on the board.

Looking at the board, you’ll be the only woman currently. Do you see that as a positive, do you think it will provide the board with a unique perspective, is it maybe not much of a relevant point, what are your thoughts around that?

In my opinion this is a positive!

We need more women on the board to provide a good representation of our community. My daughters wanted me to apply for this position and I hope to make them proud in everything I do.

What are you looking forward to now that you’ve been appointed to the board?

I’m looking forward to learning all I can and being an asset to the board.

Looking ahead, what do you think the future holds for the students of Cordell? Whether that’s from a general, educational, or COVID side of things.

I think the future of our students is going in the right direction.

We have caring administration and support staff to get our students through any challenges we may face.

Looking at last year and how they handled the pandemic I don’t think it could have went any better.

My high school and elementary students never missed a beat and our teachers did an amazing job working with us.
