On the week of May, 23, 2001, a car seat safety check led by Don Cannon Motors was deemed a success. Out of the 42 cars serviced only four of them had properly installed car seats, said event organizer Nikki Kuehne. Fifteen car seats were given away to those who qualified, and the rest were donated to child safety organizations.

Cordell Junior High English teacher Sherry Pankhurst was named teacher of the year. The runner ups for this award were LeeAnn Blackburn and Kim Hinds.

A county-wide ladybug release was held, sponsored by the Washita County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee. Grade School students from Washita Heights, Cordell, Canute, Burns Flat-Dill City, Sentinel, and the Corn Bible Academy seventh grade released approximately 72,000 ladybugs. Each student got their own cup of ladybugs and some facts about the bugs from Lowayne Piercey, who readily suited up in a ladybug costume. The bugs were released around schools, parks, businesses, rose gardens, football fields, golf courses, and wheat and alfalfa fields.

The Cordell School Board hired a new coach, counselor, and music teacher. The teachers chosen for these positions were Burce Hendrickson as football coach, Shane Boothe as the JH/HS counselor, and Shirley Clayton as the music teacher.

A new solution for the rapidly growing musk thistle problem was proposed, using weevils to eradicate the harmful plants.

40 years ago

On the week of May 27, 1981, the Robertson Factory celebrated their tenth anniversary with a celebration for the staff and their families.

A motorcycle, operated by Early Wayne Wright, crashed onto the front porch of George Montgomery. The cycle took out a support beam, struck a parked motorcycle and another beam. According to city policeman Benny Donahou, Wright was ejected from the cycle prior to the collision and com plained of an arm injury. Wright did not seek medical attention.

The General Mills Elevator of Cordell reported that the local price of wheat was $3.78, up eleven cents from the day before.

Near Cloud Chief, between seven and eight thousand acres of wheat was lost due to hail damage. About 75 farms were damaged by the golf ball sized hail. The wheat was reported to be so damaged that farmers wouldn’t even be able to use it for hay.

One family was left homeless after three tornadoes landed in Washita county.

Rhonda Kay Turner and Roy Brent Payne announced their upcoming wedding, planned on June fifth.

Judy Martin and Steven Bailey of Mangum announced their engagement to relatives living in Washita County.

Karla DeAnn Dodson officially became the bride of Timothy Wilson in a candlelight ceremony on the night of April 18, at 7 p.m.

90 years ago

On the week of May 21, 1931, it was announced that a Typhoid clinic would open the following Tuesday. According to The Beacon, the clinic would be run by local physicians and the state health department.

James Posey was charged with wife abandonment, for leaving his wife and eight month old daughter, Betty Jo in destitute circumstances. He was released under bond for $1000.

Leonard Clay was charged with perjury for claiming his 15 year old spouse was 19 on their marriage license.

Bob Meacham was alleged to have stolen five hens from Chris Kolb Jr. He was released under bond for $1000.

H.W Juston and W.H Welch were arrested for possession of intoxicating liquor, the pair were alleged to have 40 pints of homebrew in their possession last Saturday.

The Cordell Hatchery had an end of season sale, offering chicks for five cents apiece.

Five couples received marriage permits, Laverne Hodges and Juanita Tidwell, Max Eugene Lee and Edna Carter, J.B. Dupree and Jennie Morrison. Glenn Melton Kelsoe and Hester Roper, and Mitchel Franklin to Noveline Sweet.

The surfacing project on hwy 14 between Clinton and Cordell was nearing the finish.

County schools were selected for study by the state department.
