The 4th Annual World Languages Week will be celebrated at Southwestern Oklahoma State University on April 6-7. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the event will be held virtually through Zoom. On Tuesday, April 6, at 3 p.m., participants will take a virtual trip to Taiwan and Greece. Sophy Liu from Taiwan and Alex Kavoulis from the Kos island of Greece will talk about their daily life, interesting traditions and festivals. Liu and Kavoulis will also give a mini language lesson in Mandarin and Greek.

After their presentation, a session called “80 Seconds Around the World Open Mic” will be held in which the audience will share their experiences about visiting different countries.

On April 7, at 3 p.m., Dr. Tugba Sevin will give a presentation about a language often used in Italy besides Italian.

“It is a very easy language to learn,” Sevin said. “This fun and interesting presentation will teach you a completely new language that you did not know about.”

Following the presentation, the SWOSU chapter of Alpha Alpha Eta (foreign languages honor society) will hold a new members induction ceremony. Members are required to meet high standards in language learning.

After the ceremony, there will be a Q&A session. New members and SWOSU faculty will be available to answer questions about languages opportunities at SWOSU, the benefits of learning foreign languages and how learning languages changed their lives.

SWOSU students are encouraged to join this year’s photo contest. The goal of this contest is to share cultural differences. Individuals can share photos of travels that show a cultural difference or is representative of a culture. Those can be emailed to Sevin at tugba. sevin@swosu.edu with their student email and student ID#.

The winners will be determined by SWOSU students in the World Languages and Cultures Association, and each will receive a gift. Winning photos will be posted to the World Languages at SWOSU Facebook page. And, the photo of the first-place winner will be displayed in the Language Lab located at Stafford Center Room 125.
