Saturday October 31st is Halloween. There will be a Full moon and it is also a “blue moon”… the 2nd Full moon in a month is a blue moon.

We have all probably used the phrase “once in a blue moon” for something that happens infrequently. Blue moons really aren’t all that rare-they occur about every 32 months. However blue moons that fall on Halloween are much more, rare.

The last time there was a blue moon on Halloween — for all time zones was 1944.

In 2001, there was a Halloween Blue Moon in the Central and western time zones.

A Halloween blue moon won’t happen again until 2039.

Saturday Oct. 31 is the last day of the season for ATV riding in Eagle’s Roost ATV Area. As of Sunday Nov. 1 motorized vehicles are not allowed in the ATV riding area.

Eagle’s Roost ATV Area will remain closed until April 1, 2021.

Saturday is also the last day of the season for Quartz Mountain Grocery and Pebble’s Beach minigolf & paddle boats.

The Grocery Store will reopen Monday March 1 and Pebble’s Beach will reopen Friday March 5.

Saturday is a good time to take down your hummingbird feeders for the season.

If you clean & disinfect the hummingbird feeders when you take them down, they will be ready to go with little effort in the spring.

When the hummingbird feeders come down, you may wish to replace them with tube feeders of Niger thistle or screen feeders of black oil sunflower seeds.

Niger thistle seeds are high in oil and are nutritious. Goldfinches, Juncos, Pine Siskins and sparrows are attracted to Niger thistle seeds.

Black oil sunflower seeds are also nutritious and even more popular than Niger thistle seeds.

Cardinals, titmice, chickadees, nuthatches, woodpecker are just a just few of the birds that relish black oil sunflower seeds.

Squirrels, deer and raccoon also are attracted to black oil sunflower seeds.

If you can only afford one type of birdseed, Black Oil Sunflower Seed is provides the best “bang for the buck.”
