Friday September 25th’s thrilling football game against the Hobart Bearcats was a beautiful display of Devil determination. It’s safe to say that every spectator remained on the edge of their seat for the game’s entirety. Unfortunately, the Devils came up short by one point, losing the game.
The Bearcats kicked off the game. The Devils came out strong but were matched by the Bearcats, holding each other at zero points in the first quarter.
A Hobart touchdown followed by a field goal early in the second quarter only made the Devils hungrier for points. Shortly after Hobart pulled ahead, a big pass from Raydon Kuehne was caught by Dane Corbin on the 27 yard line, this being one of the longest completions of the season for the devils. This catch put the Devils in the perfect position for Senior Raydon Kuehne to make a touchdown. Kuehne also kicked a successful field goal, tying the game with 11:15 left in the half. The Bearcats went on to score another seven points ending the half with a score of 14-7.
The Cordell Blue Devils came back onto the field with pep in their step, holding the Bearcats at 14 points for the entire third quarter.
The Devils got down to business in the fourth quarter, scoring seven points early on. Those seven points, scored by Kuehne, tied the game once again. The teams held each other for the remainder of the quarter, pushing the game into overtime with a score of 14-14.
The Hobart Bearcats quickly scored another seven points. The Devils then scored a touchdown, giving them the option to tie up the game again, or convert the points and try for another touchdown. The boys in blue made the decision to shoot for the win but came up a few inches short on the touchdown. This ended the game 21-20, Cordell being the latter.
Head Coach Zane Trammell described the game as a “hard fought ballgame.” Trammel told The Beacon, “Hobart met our expectations, they played hard, didn’t make many mistakes and they are well coached.”
Despite the loss Coach is proud of the way the boys played Friday, and he said, “Tonight we were the team that I always knew we could be, this was just the first time that we have been that for four quarters.”
Senior Bode Gallagher chalks up the loss to multiple penalties and turnovers. Gallagher told The Beacon, “Despite all of the mistakes, we still put ourselves in a position to win.” He said, “our offense executed things well, and our defense put up a good, strong effort.”
Trammell commended Seniors, Raydon Kuehne and Adden Zanghi for their performance in Friday’s game. Coach also applauded the Freshman starters who “came in big” for the team.
