Long-Term Care Facilities Beginning To Reopen

The normal may look different than it did before, but this new normal can and will be okay--more than okay. Things are beginning to open back up slowly. Long-term care facilities are working through a phasedtype of reopening so that they can close any gaps and continue to control the environment to prevent the spread of Covid 19.

You can now look forward to a specific date to once again see your loved one in person, and practice those air hugs! Check with the facility that is now home to your loved one to find out their scheduled dates to resume some type of visitation. Know that this will look different. Most are allowing only one or two visitors at time with an appointment, proper PPE and social distancing. Also, many long-term care facilities that had not been accepting new residents are now able to do so.

Over the past several months, we have become accustomed to “work arounds” due to Covid 19 and the restrictions put in place to prevent the spread of this virus. We have learned to visit through windows and by waving at our loved ones in a car parade. Previously tech-impaired residents have learned to use all the functions of their cell phones and iPads to stay in touch with their loved ones and the world outside.

Many long-term care facility staffs have really stepped up in exceptional ways to not only keep their residents well, but to keep them active, engaged and loved. As the loved ones on the outside, you are all to be commended for working harder to let those residents know they are still a part of your family.

Keep yourself in the loop of what is going on at the facility where your loved one lives, know their procedures and make sure they know how to contact you if the need should arise.
