The Oklahoma Press Association on Monday announced the awardees for the Better Newspaper Contest. The Cordell Beacon was honored with seven awards in six different categories.

In the individual awards categories, Beacon editor Bob Henline was awarded first place for best news story for his coverage of an assault on the Cordell High School campus last year, “Parents Look For Answers In Wake of Student Assault.” He also earned first place in the individual column writing category.

Henline took home four other individual awards. He won second place and third place in the sports photography category (photos below), third place in feature writing for the story, “Burnin’ Down The House: Local Fire Departments Perform Joint Training,” and third place for in-depth reporting for the story “Ward Four Candidate May Be Ineligible.”

The Beacon was honored with second place in the overall editorial writing category.

“I don’t personally know any journalists who do this for the awards, and certainly not for the money, but it is nice when your colleagues and peers recognize the work you’re doing,” Henline said.

This year’s Oklahoma Press Association Better Newspaper Contest was judged by members of the Maine Press Association.
