Vermillion To Seek Election This Year

A third Washita County incumbent has announced her intention to file for election this fall. Lynda Vermillion, who currently serves as Clerk of the District Court, will be filing for election to the office.

Vermillion was appointed to the office in May 2018, after the retirement of the previous clerk. Before her appointment, she had served as one of the clerks since 2005.

Vermillion said the job is basically managing all of the various documents and payments that go through the district court, including civil suits and criminal matters, and doing it in a customer-focused manner. The job, she said, is mostly defined by state law, but those laws must be vigorously followed.

She said the biggest challenge, as with most county offices, is successfully delivering on the job requirements in the face of ever-shrinking budgets. Part of that customer service includes sometimes telling customers her office is not allowed to provide advice.

“It happens a lot,” she said. “But we can only advise people to consult an attorney.”

She said her experience and training make her uniquely suited for the job.

“Honestly, I feel like I am easy to get along with, and I know the rules and regulations of the job and how to deal with any changes the legislature hands down.”
