Hijacker Shot And Killed in Rio De Janeiro
A police sniper in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro shot and killed a man who had taken 37 hostages on a bus Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019. The man had identified himself as a military policeman and was armed. He threatened to use gasoline to set the bus on fire before he was shot.
Lost Utah Hiker Found In Montana WIlderness
Kaden Laga, a 25-yearold Utah man who was hiking with family in Montana, was found alive after being lost and alone in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in western Montana.
Laga was walking ahead of his group when he took a wrong turn and got lost in the wilderness. After five days of search-andrescue operations, Laga was found alive. He said he survived by eating crickets and berries and drinking stream water.
Beer Recalled Over Explosion Risk
My Turn Junk, a craft brew from Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee, is being recalled because small amounts of wild yeast have been detected in the brew. Brewery officials say the beer is still safe to drink, but the wild yeast can continue to ferment, which may cause the build-up of carbon monoxide, creating a risk of explosion.
Hotel Shooting Leaves Four Teens Wounded
Authorities in Kansas City, Miss., say four teens were wounded during a shooting the Sheraton Suites Country Club. Two of the victims are listed with “life-threatening” injuries, according to police.
After a search of the area, police say the shooter or shooters had fled in an unknown direction.
Chicago Man Pulls Crash Victim Out Of Burning Car
While waiting for his bus early Sunday morning, Cook County Forest Preserve employee Chris Cammon heard the sounds of screeching tires right before a car crashed into a light pool across the street from his bus stop.
Cammon rushed across the street and pulled the 24-year-old driver out of the burning car and to safety before emergency responders arrived on the scene. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center and listed in critical condition.
Arrest Made In 27 Year Old Homicide Case
Police have made an arrest in the murder case of Tracy Zandstra, who went missing from her Stirling City, Calif., home in November 1991.
Richard Pyle, 55, of Stockton, Calif., was living, and romantically involved with, Zandstra at the time of her disappearance. He was arrested last week in connection with the murder. Although her body was never found, authorities say they have uncovered evidence showing she was murdered and her body disposed of.
Texas Towns Hit With Cyber Attack
State officials in Texas have confirmed that computer systems in at least 23 municipalities have been hit by hackers demanding a ransom. The ongoing breach is being investigated by state cybersecurity experts as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Officials said the attack has taken the municipal systems completely offline, but have not yet been able to identify who is behind the attack. The Texas Department of Information Resources said the nature of the attacks and the evidence so far points to “one single theat actor.”
The cyber attack is considered the single largest coordinated ransomware attack Texas has ever experienced.
U.S. Tests Missile Previously Banned By Treaty
According to Pentagon officials, the United States has successfully tested a missile that exceeds the limits established by the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, which was scrapped by the Trump Administration just weeks ago.
The treaty barred the possession, production, or flight-testing of all types of missiles with a range between 310 and 3.417 miles. The missile tested by the U.S. government was a modified Tomahawk cruise missile that, according to the Pentagon, flew more than 310 miles.
Trump Confirms Desire To Buy Greenland
President Donald Trump confirmed Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019, that his administration has discussed the possibility of buying Greenland, saying the deal was just “a large real estate deal,” and that the island would be of strategic importance to the United States.
“It’s just something we’ve talked about,” Trump told reporters. “Denmark essentially owns it. We’re very good allies with Denmark. We’ve protected Denmark like we protect large portions of the world, so the concept came up.”
