10 YEARS AGO

On the week of June 15, 2011, 13 county organizations lost their tax exempt status as a result of failure to submit their required annual reports for three straight years. Their privileges were revoked by the Internal Revenue Service.

Abbey Kliewer, Daughter of Phil and Milli Kliewer, was named the 2010 Limited Youth Western Treasure High Point Winner by the American Quarter Horse Association.

Doug Misak was named director of the Center for Economic and Business Development at Southwestern Oklahoma State College.

The Cordell Public Library announced the launch of their summer reading program, urging young minds to indulge in reading during their break from school. The theme for the 2011 program was world travel.

The price of wheat given by the Farmer’s Cooperative Association of Bessie was $7.89 at noon on Tuesday, June 14, 2011.

Courtney Hinz and Bryan Dewrell were united in marriage on April 30, 2011.

Local talent won the Oklahoma Girls’ Coaches Association All-State Game on June 4, 2011. The players from the region participating in the games were Emily Dick of Corn Bible Academy and Logan Mckee of Cordell.

20 YEARS AGO

On the week of June 6, 2001 harvest season began in Cordell. The first truckload of wheat in the county was delivered Saturday to the Bessie Farmers Co-op by Lester and Karen Burns.

All other elevators soon followed, each receiving their first loads on Sunday. The first loads delivered Sunday are as follows in no specific order; Wheeler Bros. from Monte and Beckie Beech, Rocky Co-op from Diffendaffer Bros, Farmer’s Co-op in Corn from W.C Pigg, and Sentinel elevators from Rusty Ridling.

The annual main street meeting was scheduled for Friday, June 8, boasting the presentation of various awards and guest speakers.

Project 2001 launched, which put cities in competition with one another to have the best designed and constructed signs to welcome all who enter their towns. The Cordell Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Cordell encouraged anyone and everyone to submit their best design ideas for the project, keeping the community involved.

A new minister was hired for the Bessie Peace Lutheran Church and Clinton Trinity Lutheran. The new pastor, Rev. David M. Darling moved from Michigan, into the Bessie parsonage.

40 YEARS AGO

On the week of June 10, 1981, the county wheat harvest was in full swing with the help of a few days of 100+ degree heat and dry winds. By Wednesday morning, over 1.4 million bushels of wheat were taken to the county’s eight elevators. Harvest was reported to be about 15 percent complete in Corn, nearing a halfway point around Bessie, and around 20 percent in other areas.

With the 1981 harvest underway, the Cordell Fire Department encouraged farmers to be cautious of possibly sparking a fire. Fireman Jim Scott announced that vehicles with catalytic converters should not be allowed on wheat fields. The year prior’s harvest served as a cautionary tale for 1981’s farmers who lost hundreds of acres of land and two vehicles to fires.

Construction of the Cordell Public Library was approved after G.W. Hastings out of Lawton made the lowest bid on the project. Hastings offered a construction price $7000 under the estimated project cost.

On Wednesday, June 10, the price of wheat given by the General Mills Elevator of Cordell was $3.79. This price was a six cent increase from the day prior, and a nine cent increase from the week before.
