National Drug Court Month Project Hailed As A Success

Is there a better way to get some sunshine while still practicing social distancing than spending the afternoon in a local park?

Thirteen Washita-Custer County Treatment Court participants and three team members participated in cleaning up Western Oklahoma to celebrate National Drug Court Month on May 27th, 2020.

Five participants met treatment court team member Kathryn Collier of Red Rock Behavioral Health Services at the Old Fishing Hole in Weatherford, OK. This group picked up four bags of trash and several cans to be recycled.

Eight participants met Associate District Judge Christopher S. Kelly and Treatment Court Coordinator Sarah Mears-Ivy at Foss Lake State Park. Park Manager Barry Hardaway helped organize the clean up and provided trash bags for the project. Participants collected 18 full bags of refuse from a swimming beach area, camping areas, and picnic areas around the lake.

One participant remarked that helping on projects like these helps him to remember how irresponsible littering is.

Washita-Custer County Treatment Court serves participants and their families in Western Oklahoma. This diversion program allows non-violent felony offenders with substance use disorders the opportunity to participate in a program of recovery, get the treatment needed to get and stay well, and get community level supervision and accountability needed to decrease recidivism rather than being incarcerated.
