Two Cordell-area veterans, James Mayfield and Mike Mayfield, were recently recognized for their service to the nation during Bixby High School’s Military Appreciation Night event.

Technical Sergeant (TSgt) James Mayfield served for 20 years in the United States Air Force, from 1953 until 1973. He was stationed in Germany, Guam, and Thailand during his time in the service.

Private First Class (PFC) Mike Mayfield served from 1988 until 1991 in the United States Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. He served in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm during his service.

The Mayfields were guests of Bixby’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tyler Schneider, the son of Fred and Almeta Schneider and grandson of James Mayfield and nephew of Mike Mayfield.

The event included a special pregame meal for the 25 veteran honorees, as well as a special photo session. The veterans were also given commemorative hats and certificates of appreciation. They were introduced on the field before the game in a ceremony that included a military flyover of the packed football stadium and a fireworks display accompanying the national anthem.
