Cordell School Board Rehires Principals

The four members of the Cordell School Board opted to skip executive session discussion and rehire principals Ann McKee (elementary school), Joe Crabb (jr. high school) and Gary Maynard (high school).

Superintendent Jerry Burrows said the trio of principals are kind, considerate and work well with parents. He also said he “appreciates what they’ve done” to better the schools.

In other action the board accepted the property and liability insurance bid of the Smith Insurance Agency, a Cordell firm. Burrows said he felt like the coverage was adequate for the school’s needs.

Burrows said the school’s public auction, which was held over the weekend, went extremely well. He said there were over 190 buyers to purchase tools and various items from the school’s old shop. Over $9,000 was raised from the auction effort; the money will be put back into the general fund and will be used to purchase computer and other educational supplies.

Crabb Selected As Female Scholar Athlete Of The Year

The Oklahoma Coaches Association has announced that Erin Crabb, Cordell High School senior, has been selected Female Scholar Athlete of the Year for Region IV, which includes all counties in southwestern Oklahoma. Erin is one of only eight senior athletes from across the state to receive this honor. Basis for selection is outstanding achievement in both athletics and academics.

CHS Jazz Band Rates Superior

The CHS Jazz Band “A” competed at the SWOSU Jazz Festival on Friday, February 10 in Weatherford. The band received a Superior Rating from each of the three judges earning them Second Place at the Festival.

Two members of the Jazz Band, Dusty Weese and Greg Diereg, were selected as Outstanding Musicians by the judges and were awarded certicates from the International Association of Jazz Educators. Greg Diereg was then selected as the Oustanding Soloist of the Festival in classes 1A and 2A and received a plaque plus a full scholarship to the SWOSU Band Camp by Kappa Kappa Psi, national band fraternity.

County Clubs Nab Awards

Fifteen members of Washita County 4-H and FFA clubs along with a numebr of adult sponsors traveled to Fort Worth, Tex., last week for the Southwestern Livestock Exposition and returned to the county with a number of awards and honors. The group left the show

The group left the show on Wednesday of last week and returned with their ribbons and certificates on Saturday.

Top honors among the county entrants were given to three Washita Heights students showing Hampshire and Durok pigs in the show.

Morris Appointed For Navy School

Lynn Curtis Morris, Cordell high school senior, has been nominated by U.S. Senator Henry Bellmon for appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.

He has also been nominated by Cong. Tom Steed for first alternate for a single fourth district vacancy at the Naval Academy. Nominations by Steed are for final competition to the academy for the class entering next summer.

Senator Bellmon says the nominees were selected on the basis of Civil Service test scores and additional information. The academy will conduct further competitive testing before making final appointments for classes starting in June or July.

Cordell Wrestlers Beat Weatherford

Cordell high school and junior high wrestlers were winners in dual matches with Weatherford on the Cordell mats Friday night of last week. The high school grapplers scored 33 points to 14 for the visitors and the junior high team won 33-19. Cordell boys came out with five pins and two decisions to account for their points while Weatherford managed four decisions.
