Coronavirus Continues To Spread Across Oklahoma

Total Confirmed Cases Hit 16,362

The spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, continues throughout the state of Oklahoma. As of Monday, July 6, the total number of confirmed cases of the disease had reached 16,362, a jump of 2,605 from the previous week’s total of 13,757. The death toll in Oklahoma has reached 399.

Nationally, nearly three million people have been infected with the virus as of July 6. The total number of confirmed cases was 2,936,077, with 130,285 people killed.

Washita County’s total number of confirmed cases remains low, at five. Throughout the 10 counties comprising District Five (Beckham, Caddo, Comanche, Cotton, Greer, Harmon, Jackson, Kiowa, Tillman, and Washita) there are 818 confirmed cases. There is at least one case in every county.

District Five Health Planner Debra Johnson warned the danger of COVID-19 is not over.

“COVID-19 is still very relevant and is in our communities,” she wrote in a July 6 press release. “According to the CDC, social distancing is the best way to slow the spread of COVID-19. If social distancing is not possible, individuals can help protect their community by wearing a face covering. It is important to remember to wash hands regularly with soap and water and to keep surfaces disinfected.”

The Oklahoma State Department of Health recommends individuals who choose to attend public gatherings to get tested for COVID-19 both before and within five to seven days after the event. Col. Lance Frye, the state commissioner of health, has advised all Oklahomans to seek COVID-19 testing.

“We need Oklahomans to get tested, even those without symptoms, so we can identify active cases and work together to minimize community spread,” he said in the press release.

The OSDH is continuing to offer free curbside COVID-19 testing at all county health department offices. Nearby offices include Clinton, Elk City, Sayre, Anadarko, Lawton, Walters, Mangum, Hollis, Altus, Hobart, and Frederick. People are asked to contact the health department office before going for a test.
