The Corn Fire Department has a new truck in its firefighting fleet, thanks in part to the hard work of the volunteer firefighters.

The department purchased a new cab and chassis for a brush truck about six months ago, and the crew has been busy ever since refurbishing the bed from an older, decommissioned truck. Corn firefighter and Washita County commissioner Bart Gossen said the Corn crew did about 90 percent of the refurbishing work to get the new truck ready for action. He credited volunteer firefighter Frank Klassen with going above and beyond to help prepare the truck.

The truck, said firefighter Sean Estes, will be a big help to the department in fighting grassfires and other non-structure fires, which he said constitute the overwhelming majority of the department’s calls.

While there are still a few minor things to be finished on the truck, Gossen said it is ready to roll into action should the call come.
