Cordell Student Tests Positive For Covid-19

An elementary student in the Cordell School System has tested for COVID-19, the superintendent has advised Cordell parents and community leaders through a letter.

School Supt. Brad Overton assured parents and leaders in the community, “There is nothing more important to Cordell Schools than the safety and health of our students, our staff and their families. We’re working directly with county health officials to address this situation,” he added.

Overton said it was a student in kindergarten who had tested positive for the virus. He confirmed other students did come in close contact with the infected student and those parents were notified.

“These students will be quarantined,” he said in the letter.

“By following the CDC guidelines and the Oklahoma State Health Department guidance, we will work to contain the spread of the virus,” Overton stated.

The superintendent advised parents and community leaders that the infected student was not a bus rider. Even so, he said school officials are modifying bus routes to decrease the number of bus riders.

He said visitors to inside the buildings will continue to be restricted.

Overton emphasizes that the school system will continue to follow all COVID-related safety procedures including disinfecting classrooms and all areas of the school. Masks, social distancing, and other precautions are recommended, according to the letter.

The CDC recommends several best practices to help prevent the spread of the virus and the superintendent’s letter lists those.

-They include washing hands often for at least 20 minutes.

-Using alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol if soap and water are not available.

-Avoid close contact with those who are sick.

-Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your sleeve.

-Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose.

-Disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects.

-Stay home when sick.

-Practice social distancing, leaving six feet between yourself and another person.

-Wear a mask when unable to social distance.
